So I know I have not really posted much this month. I have been having some neck issues for a little while now, but it has gotten a lot worse lately.
It all started about 3 1/2 years ago, I remember because it was right after I brought Brynlee home from the hospital. I told Brad that I was worried because I couldn't feel two of my fingers in my left hand. He just tried to reassure me and I tried not to focus on it, but I always was a little nervous inside because I never got my feeling back.
Fast forward a year later and it worried me enough that I thought I better get the nerves tested to make sure they were still working. I got a nerve conduction study done and she said that the nerves weren't dead but that they were being compromised most likely by a disc in my neck, which I would either need steroid shots or surgery to fix. So I went home and decided not to do anything about it since they were still working and I wasn't interested in any type of surgery.
Fast forward another two years and I began to have a lot of pain in my neck when I would workout or run. So after a month of some serious neck pain, I stopped working out all together. Well after that the pain went away for the most part. I was having a good week when my mom was here to visit, so I decided to go on the Go Garts with my little girls. At the time it seemed like no big deal, but now it is something I regret. This guy came from no where and hit me HARD right in the front side. I know he was trying to be funny, but it made me mad because it hurt my neck.
I thought my neck would only hurt a few days but it turned into several months accompanied by horrible headaches that messed with my vision.
So I went back to the dr. because I really had to get something done at this point. I mean I couldn't bend over to put my shoes on, couldn't pick up my kids, couldn't carry my purse, couldn't hold a gallon of milk.... you get the idea...pretty much everything I need to do as a mom.
So he sent me for an MRI of my neck. And turns out I have
Syringomyelia in C6-C7 of my spinal chord. That is what had caused the numbness in my fingers. So I was referred to a neurosurgeon. The neurosurgeon wanted more MRI's so the following week I got one of my brain, mid and lower back. I think it was like $18,000 in MRI's by the time I was done.
Anyway, so after talking to the neurosurgeon he said that I may have to have surgery on my spinal chord so the Syringomyelia doesn't damage other nerves in my body, but he likes to leave that as a very last resort in someone as young as me since it is so risky. So he wants to wait six months and do a repeat MRI to see if the syrinx has spread or if the flow of my spinal fluid is being disrupted.
He told me that the pain I am feeling is from neck trauma higher up on my neck, and the pain from that is what he believes is causing my headaches. So he put me on 4 prescriptions and a neck brace. The pain meds help, but I still feeling a lot of pain when they wear off, so any prayers that you want to offer on my behalf would be greatly appreciated since I don't know how long I will be dealing with this neck pain/spinal chord problem.
